notations
A series of works originally created for the Edinburgh Art Festival Ring of Truth exhibition at Blackie House Library and Museum.
Inspired initially by the shapes of neumes (notes) found in older music manuscripts. Each version consists of four ‘scales’ or lines of 25 squares. Each line consists of squares printed in tints starting from 4% and increasing by 4% to 100%. A base line version of the lines can be seen in the photograph at the top of this page. Each iteration of each print consists then of a randomised ordering of the tinted squares: one version mixes the squares but retains their colour lines, and other version mixes all the squares. Colours used are pure cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

The two versions in book form contain 5 iterations of the random patterning and end with the base sequence.

Each new poster-print (h190mm x h720mm) is a new randomisation of the notes. One set keeps the colours in their lines, the other mixes them together. Printed inkjet on Bockingford watercolour paper 300gsm | signed and numbered on reverse; 2025.
